The Election Commission has awarded control of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) to the faction led by Ajit Pawar, giving them control over the party’s assets and bank accounts. This decision was based on the numerical strength of the factions, with Ajit Pawar’s faction holding the majority of NCP’s 53 MLAs in the Maharashtra Assembly.

This has led to a division within the party, with Sharad Pawar being asked to choose a name for his faction ahead of the upcoming Rajya Sabha elections. Ajit Pawar’s faction, which comprises 41 MLAs, had previously joined hands with the BJP-Eknath Shinde alliance, resulting in a public split and a loss of face for Sharad Pawar.

Ajit Pawar’s move came after unsuccessful attempts to acquire power, including his support for the aborted bid of the BJP, led by Devendra Fadnavis, to form a government in 2019. Since the split, he has criticized his uncle for not stepping down from the party’s top post in a timely manner.

Members of the Sharad Pawar faction have expressed frustration with the Election Commission’s decision, describing it as a “murder of democracy.” The Supreme Court’s recent observations on the Mayoral election in Chandigarh were cited as supporting evidence of this claim.

The Shiv Sena, an ally of Sharad Pawar, has brushed off the decision, indicating that the matter may be taken to the Supreme Court. Ajit Pawar has accepted the decision “with humility.”
