Biden Shades Trump in Seth Meyers Interview: “Can’t Remember Wife’s Name

During an appearance on NBC’s Late Night with Seth Meyers broadcast early Tuesday, the president discussed reports that Trump had referred to his wife by a different name. It’s uncertain whether Trump was calling out to his wife or a former aide in the reported episode. Biden emphasized that what really matters is the outdated nature of the former president’s ideas, rather than his wife’s name slip. Biden, who is 81, has attempted to deflect questions about his age and mental acuity with humor.

Nonetheless, he has struggled to reassure Americans that he is fit to serve another four years as president. According to an NBC News poll conducted in January, three-quarters of voters, including half of Democrats, express concerns about Biden’s age. This contrasts with less than half who harbor similar concerns about Trump, aged 77. Biden criticized Trump’s desire to revert to policies from decades ago, such as on issues like Roe v. Wade.

Trump’s recent comments, where he suggested his legal problems help him with Black voters, were denounced by White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre as “repugnant and divisive.” In addition, Trump compared himself to the late Russian dissident Alexey Navalny and declined to blame Russian President Vladimir Putin for Navalny’s death. He also suggested he would allow Russia to invade NATO allies who have not met defense spending targets and mocked the military service of GOP rival Nikki Haley’s husband. Biden also criticized Trump for referring to “insurrectionists” arrested for joining the Jan. 6, 2021, US Capitol riot as “patriots” and for praising dictators.
