How frequently should adults monitor their blood pressure levels? admin, April 9, 2024 A recent study by the Indian Council of Medical Research-National Centre for Disease Informatics and Research (ICMR-NCDIR) revealed that around 30% of Indians have never tested their blood pressure. According to Dr. Tushar Tayal, lead consultant at CK Birla Hospital, Gurugram, individuals above 40 should have their blood pressure checked annually. Meanwhile, those between 18 and 40 should get their blood pressure checked every three to five years unless they are at high risk. Dr. Ajay Agarwal, Director of Internal Medicine at Fortis Hospital, Noida, emphasized the importance of hypertensive patients monitoring their blood pressure at least once a month with a digital monitor, under specific conditions. Dr. Agarwal also highlighted the recommended blood pressure levels for individuals with and without risk factors. For individuals without risk factors, their blood pressure should be below 140/90 mm Hg, whereas for those with risk factors, such as diabetes or kidney disease, the prescribed levels should be less than 130/80 mm Hg to minimize the risk of target organ damage. The study found that about 34% of Indians are in the prehypertensive stage, which is an intermediate state between normal blood pressure and hypertension. This is concerning as it substantially contributes to cardiovascular diseases. Dr. Tayal stressed the importance of monitoring and controlling blood pressure, whether through medication or other means, as undiagnosed hypertension is a risk factor for strokes, heart attacks, kidney damage, and eye damage. *(This story has not been edited by NDTV staff and is published from a syndicated feed. )* health and wellness
