Indian Student Located in the US Days After Disappearing

The US is a favored destination for Indian students, with over 2.6 lakh students migrating to the country in the 2022-2023 session. This marks a 35% increase from the previous session.

17-year-old Ishika Thakore had gone missing in Frisco since Monday. The Frisco police sought the help of the public to trace her, posting on X and providing details of her last known whereabouts and appearance.

In response to the post, the police later announced that Ishika Thakore had been located and thanked everyone for their support and offers of assistance. Tragically, several Indian and Indian-origin students have died in the US this year.

These incidents have raised concerns about the safety of Indian-origin students in the United States. One such case involved a 25-year-old student from Hyderabad, who was found dead earlier this week after moving to the US in 2023 for a Master’s at Cleveland State University.

Concerns were also raised when Mohammed Abdul Arfath, who had been missing for nearly three weeks, was found dead. The consulate had been in touch with his family during the search.

Since the beginning of 2024, there have been at least 11 deaths involving Indian or Indian-origin students in the US, highlighting the troubling trend. The US remains an attractive destination for Indian students seeking higher education opportunities, but the recent events have raised concerns about the safety and well-being of students in the country.
