Akhilesh Yadav Criticizes Cops Disguised as Priests at Kashi Temple

The recent decision to allow police officers in Uttar Pradesh to wear traditional clothing, such as dhoti-kurta for men and salwar kurta for women, has sparked controversy. Akhilesh Yadav, the leader of the Samajwadi Party, strongly criticized this decision, stating that it poses a major security risk and should not be allowed according to police manuals. He expressed concern that allowing officers to dress in traditional attire could potentially lead to fraudulent activities and threaten the safety of the public. Yadav’s comments were in response to a news clip showing police officers dressed in traditional clothing, which was shared on social media.

In defense of the controversial measure, Varanasi Police Commissioner Mohit Agarwal cited reasons such as crowd management and the well-being of devotees. He argued that the traditional attire of priests fosters a more positive interaction with pilgrims, minimizing the risk of unrest or agitation. He emphasized that the duty in a temple is different from elsewhere, as police officers have to manage a different type of crowd, and their presence is aimed at ensuring easy access for devotees and providing help and guidance. Agarwal also mentioned that the policy of deploying officers in traditional attire follows a “no touch” approach, as devotees respond more positively to priests in such situations.

This approach is intended to prevent devotees from getting hurt in crowded areas.
