India Boasts World’s Biggest Renewable Energy Park, 5 Times Larger Than Paris

Khavda is the world’s largest renewable energy park, utilizing both solar and wind energy. The area is known for its significantly high solar radiation and strong wind speeds, making it an ideal location for the park. The park, which covers an area of 538 square kilometers, is owned by the Adani group and is located in Gujarat’s Kutch.

The park is part of an ambitious renewable energy plan by Adani Green Energy Ltd, aiming to generate 30 megawatts of clean electricity. The company has already commissioned 2 GW of capacity at Khavda, with plans to add an additional 4 GW in the current fiscal year and 5 GW every year thereafter. The remote location of Khavda presents various challenges, including heavy dust storms, limited communication and transport infrastructure, and the lack of habitable areas nearby.

Furthermore, the area’s proximity to the international border with Pakistan and its classification as a restricted zone add additional complexities to the project. Despite these challenges, the Adani group has undertaken extensive infrastructure development at Khavda, including the construction of roads, drainage systems, and desalination plants. Additionally, the company has conducted thorough geotechnical and environmental impact assessments before starting construction.

The land at Khavda is leased from the government for 40 years, and the park is expected to play a significant role in India’s renewable energy targets, aiming to generate 500 GW of electricity from non-fossil sources by 2030. The park’s planned capacity of 30 GW will comprise 26 GW of solar and 4 GW of wind capacity, making it a crucial contributor to India’s renewable energy goals.
