India’s Position During Threat of Open Conflict Between Iran and Israel Explained

Iran, which backs Palestine, has launched a drone attack on Israel amid the latter’s war on Hamas. The Israeli military reported that most of the 200-plus ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and attack drones were intercepted with the help of Israel’s allies before landing.

Teheran claimed the attack was an act of “self-defense” after its diplomatic mission in Damascus was targeted. New Delhi expressed serious concerns about the escalation of hostilities, calling for immediate de-escalation, restraint, and a return to diplomacy to maintain security and stability in the region.

The escalation was expected since Israel started its war on Hamas. India, which has strong ties with both Israel and Iran, issued an advisory last week urging its citizens not to travel to either Iran or Israel and asking Indians in the countries to observe “utmost precautions.”

India’s strategic ties with Israel have strengthened in recent years, with cooperation in various fields, including defense and technology. However, India’s positive relationship with Iran, as a major supplier of oil, dates back many years.

India and Iran have a history of close relations, with Iran being one of India’s prime suppliers of oil. Despite being unable to purchase oil from Iran due to sanctions, the two countries have remained close, even concluding a defense pact in 2002.

India’s stance on the conflict reflects its support for both Israel and the Palestinians. Prime Minister Narendra Modi described the attack on Israel as a “terrorist act” but has also raised concerns about the humanitarian tragedy in Gaza.

India continues to advocate for a two-state solution and offers support to the Palestinians.
