India’s Position in the Midst of Potential Conflict Between Iran and Israel Explained

Iran, which supports Palestine, has launched a drone attack on Israel during the latter’s conflict with Hamas. The Israeli military reported that most of the ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and attack drones were intercepted with the assistance of Israel’s allies before they reached their targets.

Iran stated that the attack was in “self-defense” following the targeting of its diplomatic mission in Damascus. New Delhi expressed serious concern about the escalating hostilities, labeling the situation a “humanitarian” tragedy and calling for de-escalation, restraint, and a return to diplomacy for maintaining peace and security in the region.

The escalation was anticipated following Israel’s military action against Hamas. India had previously advised its citizens against traveling to Iran or Israel and urged those living in either country to exercise “utmost precautions.”

The recent escalation places India in a delicate position due to its strong ties with both Iran and Israel. India’s robust relationship with Israel, especially in defense and technology, has strengthened in recent years, and its positive historical ties with Iran, including as a key oil supplier, have persisted despite challenges.

Despite not considering Hamas a terrorist organization, India labeled the attack on Israel, which prompted retaliation, as a terrorist act. PM Modi’s stance against terrorism and support for Israel was evident in his tweet describing the attack as a “terrorist act.”

However, India has also voiced concern for the humanitarian situation in Gaza and continues to support the Palestinians while advocating for a two-state solution.
