India’s Market Opening Benefited American Farmers, Says US admin, April 16, 2024 India and the United States have taken steps that have resulted in increased market access for certain agricultural products between the two countries. This was announced by US Trade Representative Katherine Tai during a session with the House Committee on Ways and Means on President Biden’s 2024 Trade Policy Agenda. In her statement, Tai highlighted that last June, India and the United States settled six WTO disputes, with India agreeing to eliminate retaliatory tariffs on various US products. This move benefitted American farmers by providing improved access for chickpeas, lentils, almonds, walnuts, and apples, benefiting farmers across the country, including those in Michigan, Oregon, and Washington. In addition to the settlements in June, in September, India and the United States resolved their final outstanding WTO dispute. As part of this resolution, India agreed to reduce tariffs on several US products, leading to increased market access for turkey, duck, blueberries, and cranberries. This decision particularly benefitted farmers in North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Wisconsin. Overall, the steps taken by India in collaboration with the United States have resulted in positive outcomes for farmers from several American states, providing them with increased market access for their agricultural products.
