The English news channel of Doordarshan, DD News, introduced its new logo during the launch of a promotional video on X. The caption in the video stated, “While our values remain the same, we are now available in a new avatar. Get ready for a news journey like never before…Experience the all-new DD News.” The new logo faced criticism online, with many users pointing out that it was saffron in color, and the unveiling coincided with the approaching elections. Jawhar Sircar, a former boss of Doordarshan’s parent organization and Trinamool MP, expressed his disappointment, stating that it was disheartening to witness the “saffronisation” of Doordarshan’s logo just before elections. He also raised concerns about the usage of saffron and labelled it a violation of the Model Code of Conduct. In contrast, Gaurav Dwivedi, the current head of Prasar Bharati, justified the color choice as essential for visual aesthetics, and he referred to the color as orange. He emphasized that the new logo and visual upgrades were in line with the channel’s branding and aesthetic. Additionally, he mentioned that the channel had also updated its overall look and feel, including new lighting and equipment enhancements. Sircar, who had previously served as the CEO of Prasar Bharati, expressed his opposition in a video, deeming the selection of saffron for the national broadcaster’s branding as inappropriate.
