India’s Likely T20 World Cup Team After 4 Weeks Of IPL 2024: Tough Battle For Second Opener, Third Spinner

According to reports, captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Jasprit Bumrah, Ravindra Jadeja, Rishabh Pant, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Siraj, and Arshdeep Singh are certainties in India’s T20 World Cup squad. The remaining five slots will be finalized based on the players’ performance in the ongoing T20 tournament.

The national selection committee is unlikely to include any new player for the T20 World Cup; the focus is on rewarding those who have consistently done well in T20 Internationals and the IPL. There are debates on the back-up opener, second-choice wicketkeeper, one finisher slot in the middle-order, and the back-up spinner.

The selectors aim to pick the remaining five slots from the 10 contenders to select the final 15 for the T20 World Cup. While Rohit and Virat are automatic selections, Shubman Gill is likely to be preferred over Yashasvi Jaiswal based on current form.

Sanju Samson and KL Rahul are the contenders for the second-choice wicketkeeper spot, with Sanju expected to be picked based on his form in the IPL 2024. As for the finisher slots, Rinku and Shivam are in great form and are considered capable of adding much-needed firepower down the order.

It is likely that either Yuzvendra Chahal or Ravi Bishnoi will be picked as the only leg-spinner in the squad, with Chahal being the preferred choice based on current form. In the bowling department, Arshdeep Singh is expected to be the preferred choice as the left-arm pacer, bringing more variety to the squad.

He has already bagged nine wickets in the IPL 2024 matches. Avesh Khan has been a wicket-taker for his team but will need to do more to secure a spot in the final 15-member squad.
