Gukesh D of India Makes History as Youngest Winner of Candidates Chess Tournament

In 2014, five-time world champion Viswanathan Anand triumphed. Gukesh accumulated nine points out of a possible 14 in the Candidates tournament and drew his final round game against American Hikaru Nakamura, making him the second Indian to win the tournament after Viswanathan Anand.

Anand congratulated Gukesh on becoming the youngest challenger and expressed his pride in the young player’s performance and resilience. The tournament’s outcome relied on the final game between Ian Nepomniachtchi and Fabiano Caruana, which ended in a draw, securing Gukesh’s victory without the need for a tie-break.

Gukesh, hailing from Chennai like Anand, made history as the third youngest chess player to earn the Grandmaster title at the age of 12 and also won a silver medal at the Hangzhou Asian Games last year.
