South Korean Woman Loses Rs 41 Lakh in Love Scam with Elon Musk Impersonator

South Korean laws lack provisions that could help prevent such crimes. An incident involved a woman in South Korea who was tricked into losing over $50,000 in a scam involving Tesla CEO Elon Musk. The woman, identified as Jeong Ji-sun, believed she was interacting with Elon Musk on Instagram, when in reality, it was just a deepfake video. According to Jeong, she initially doubted the authenticity of the account, but her doubts disappeared after the fake Musk shared personal details and engaged in video calls using deepfake technology.

The scammer convinced her to transfer $50,000 to a bank account, promising to make her rich through investments. It was later revealed that Jeong fell victim to an elaborate AI scam, resulting in her financial loss. Unfortunately, South Korean laws currently lack provisions to prevent such crimes. According to a recent study conducted at Korea University, 71.4% of the victims of similar crimes between January and June of 2022 were women.
