US Woman’s Rare Medical Condition Leaves Her Permanently Aroused: How It Ruined My Life

Scarlet Kaitlin Wallen, a 21-year-old woman in the United States, has opened up about living with persistent genital arousal disorder (PGAD), a rare medical condition that causes uncontrollable arousal. She has been experiencing severe and constant pain in her genitals since the age of six, which has affected her ability to work or study full-time. Ms. Wallen’s experience with PGAD has been marked by excruciating pain, with the condition affecting approximately one percent of the population. She described the pain as a constant burning sensation and likened it to feeling naturally aroused but without the desire for it.

Ms. Wallen underwent surgeries to remove some of her genital nerves in an effort to alleviate the pain, and she remains hopeful for a painless sexual relationship in the future. Since the onset of PGAD at the age of six, Ms. Wallen’s condition has impacted her daily life, preventing her from participating in activities with friends and causing her to experience discomfort and unwanted arousal. Despite experiencing temporary relief during her teenage years, the pain and arousal would return with intensity. Additionally, Ms. Wallen was diagnosed with congenital neuroproliferative vestibulodynia, a condition that causes hypersensitivity in pelvic nerves.

She underwent surgeries to remove parts of the painful tissue, increasing her prospects of having a “normal” sex drive in the future. She remains optimistic about the ongoing developments in treatments and surgeries for PGAD and looks forward to a life without the condition.
