India’s Pro-Palestinian Protests at US Universities: Assessing Actions at Home

In every democracy, there has to be a balance between freedom of expression, a sense of responsibility, and public safety and order. This is especially important when democracies interact with each other, as we are judged by our actions at home rather than our words abroad. When asked about the concerns for Indian students studying in US universities, a representative stated that they are in touch with the students and will address any issues that arise. Across the United States, colleges are facing escalating unrest due to pro-Palestinian protests on their campuses.

This has led to administrators implementing unprecedented measures to manage the situation. For example, the University of Texas in Austin and the University of Southern California saw multiple arrests during protests. At Columbia University, negotiations between officials and protesters about clearing encampments on campus have been described as “unstable”, with an extended 48-hour deadline adding uncertainty to the situation. Additionally, the California State Polytechnic University, Humboldt campus, remains closed due to ongoing protests and safety concerns.
