Congress Expected to Address Amethi and Raebareli Seats in Today’s Key Meeting.

Today’s top Congress meeting will focus on the Amethi and Rae Bareli Lok Sabha constituencies. Congress sources informed news agency ANI that leaders of the UP Congress and the All India Congress Committee (AICC) in charge of UP, Avinash Pandey, have been summoned for the meeting.

The UP Congress had proposed that the Gandhi family contest the Amethi and Raibareli seats, leaving the decision to the CEC and top leadership. According to a senior party functionary, the proposal is viewed positively and there is a high chance that Congress will name Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi as their candidates for the Amethi and Rae Bareli seats, respectively.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, Smriti Irani of the Bharatiya Janata Party defeated Congress leader Rahul Gandhi in Amethi. Irani has been nominated again by the BJP for the seat.

Meanwhile, the businessman-husband of Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra expressed his desire to contest from the Amethi parliamentary seat, stating that the entire country wishes for him to enter active politics and criticizing Irani for not fulfilling her promises. Rae Bareli has been a Congress stronghold since 1960, with both Feroze Gandhi and Indira Gandhi representing it.

Currently, Sonia Gandhi holds the position of MP from Rae Bareli, but with her moving to the upper house, the Congress is likely to field Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, who is a general secretary in the party. Both Amethi and Rae Bareli Lok Sabha constituencies are set to vote in the fifth phase of the Lok Sabha elections on May 20.
