Rohit Sharma is not the best choice to captain India in T20Is, according to the former KKR Team Director.

The speculation about Rohit Sharma’s future with the Indian team in the shortest format came to an end when he made his T20I comeback after more than a year in the home series against Afghanistan in January. This return followed the backing of BCCI Secretary Jay Shah for Rohit to lead the team at the upcoming T20 World Cup in the West Indies and USA.

However, there has been criticism of the BCCI’s decision to appoint Rohit as captain. Shom Bhattacharjya questioned the decision, suggesting that it may have hampered the team’s performance.

According to Bhattacharjya, Rohit’s current batting form is a concern. He pointed out that players like Virat Kohli, Yashasvi Jaiswal, and Shubman Gill are currently in better batting form and are strong contenders for the opening positions.

However, Rohit’s appointment as captain means he will open the batting, pushing one of the in-form players to bat lower down the order. Bhattacharjya suggested that Jasprit Bumrah would be a better choice as captain due to his crucial role as a bowler in the team.

Despite acknowledging Rohit’s exceptional skills as a cricketer, Bhattacharjya emphasized the importance of winning a World Cup and suggested that Rohit’s aspiration to conclude his career with a high note, by winning a World Cup, is a commendable goal. He described this as “book-ending,” highlighting the significance of achieving this milestone in Rohit’s career.
