Google Layoffs: Engineer on H-1B Visa Shares Experience of Python Layoffs and Emotional Impact

Recently, Alphabet-owned Google announced layoffs, leading to the departure of a former employee, Matt Hu, a Software Engineer who had been with the company for two years. Sharing his personal experience, Hu described the shock of receiving a notice regarding his employment and losing access to work-related sites in a matter of minutes. Consequently, he discovered that he was not the only one affected, as his manager and other members of the team were also laid off.

Hu’s post on LinkedIn revealed the emotional toll the layoffs had on the team, particularly as they grappled with the abrupt and devastating change. He emphasized that half of the team had been eliminated, and shared the chilling realization that his once professional manager was no longer in the same capacity. Despite the hardship, he conveyed his resolve to move forward, echoing the sentiment of his manager to remain calm and resilient in the face of adversity.

The ex-employee concluded his post with a message of determination, expressing his commitment to moving forward and suggesting that the entire team would do the same. He included a screenshot of the email notification and mentioned that he was part of the Python team, indicating the specifics of his departure from Google.
