Congress workers in Amethi gathered outside the party office to protest the delay in announcing candidates for the prestigious Amethi and Raebareli seats, with the election due on May 20. With only four days left for filing nominations, the workers expressed frustration and urged the party to expedite the announcement.

The Congress’s delay in announcing candidates is attributed to the shock of the BJP’s victory in 2019 when Rahul Gandhi lost to Union minister Smriti Irani, ending the party’s longstanding hold on Amethi. The workers are eagerly awaiting the party’s decision, as the seat has symbolic significance with its association to the Gandhi family, including Rahul’s uncle Sanjay Gandhi and his parents Rajiv and Sonia Gandhi.

There are reports suggesting that Rahul Gandhi may not be interested in contesting from Amethi, which has added to the uncertainty. However, the protesting workers expressed their faith in the Gandhi family and demanded that either Rahul Gandhi or Priyanka Gandhi Vadra contest from Amethi.

Meanwhile, there are speculations about Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s electoral ambitions, particularly in Raebareli, but her intentions remain uncertain. In contrast, Union minister Smriti Irani has filed her nomination from Amethi, exuding confidence in securing a second term.

When asked about her preference between Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra as opponents, she expressed indifference, stating, “I could not care less. Whoever comes will lose.”

As the election date approaches, the Congress workers in Amethi continue to await the announcement of candidates, with hopes centered on the Gandhi family’s involvement in the electoral contest.
