Sita And Gita, assumed dead, return alive and married one year later

The police discovered that two sisters, Sita and Gita, had run away from home to marry their lovers. Although not twins, their story could have been the plot of an interesting movie. The sisters, in their 20s from Uttar Pradesh’s Gorakhpur, were reported missing and suspected to have been murdered, only to turn up alive and married with a child each. The family, including the sisters and their brother, used to live in Delhi, while their hometown was in UP’s Gorakhpur.

In January 2023, the sisters’ brother, Ajay Prajapati, filed a missing report for Sita (20) and Gita (21). He approached a man from their village, Jaynath Maurya, who allegedly had an affair with one of the sisters. During an argument, Jaynath and his family threatened Ajay, saying, “You’ll meet the same fate as your sisters.” Worried for his sisters, Ajay went to the police station to file a murder case against Jaynath Maurya and his family, but the police refused to file a complaint due to lack of evidence.

Ajay then approached the court, and a year later, on January 8, 2024, the case was filed in Belghat police station, Gorakhpur, as per the court’s order. After four months of investigation, the police discovered that the sisters were alive and had run away from home to marry their lovers. On learning about the murder case filed by their brother, the sisters approached the police to avoid any innocent person being punished. Sita revealed that she is married to Vijender, living in Haryana, and has a five-month-old daughter.

Geeta told the police that she married Suresh Ram, a resident of Uttarakhand’s Almora, and also has a six-month-old daughter. *(With inputs from Abrar Ahmad)*
