2024 Lok Sabha Elections: Congress to Announce Amethi, Raebareli Candidates with Only 24 Hours Left

The Congress Party is gearing up for the upcoming elections in the constituencies of Amethi and Raebareli, which have historically been considered strongholds for the party. The party’s president, Mallikarjun Kharge, is expected to announce the candidates for these seats today.

There has been widespread speculation about the potential candidature of former party president Rahul Gandhi for Amethi and Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra for Raebareli. Rahul Gandhi, who suffered an unexpected defeat to BJP’s Smriti Irani in Amethi in 2019, is anticipated to contest from there again, possibly alongside his current constituency, Wayanad in Kerala.

Meanwhile, for Raebareli, which has been held by Sonia Gandhi since 2004, there is anticipation surrounding Priyanka Gandhi Vadra’s entry into electoral politics. However, internal discussions within the party reflect hesitancy towards fielding all three members of the Gandhi family in parliament, considering the criticism of “dynastic politics” often directed at the party by the BJP.

Despite the delay in the announcement of candidates, Congress leaders have expressed confidence and reassurance. Senior party leader Jairam Ramesh stated that there is no fear, and discussions are ongoing within the party.

The last date for nominations is tomorrow, May 3rd. Congress leader Rajeev Shukla emphasized the popularity of the Gandhi family and the large crowds attending their public meetings, noting that the decision now lies with the Congress Election Committee (CEC).

Both Amethi and Raebareli have been closely associated with the political legacy of the Gandhi family. Amethi has been represented by Rahul Gandhi since 2004 until his defeat in 2019, while Raebareli has been the stronghold of the Gandhi family, with Sonia Gandhi representing it from 2004 to 2024.

The Gandhi family’s association with these constituencies dates back to earlier generations, including Feroze Gandhi, Indira Gandhi’s husband, and other family members. With the Congress contesting 17 out of Uttar Pradesh’s 80 Lok Sabha seats in alliance with the Samajwadi Party and other regional outfits, the selection of candidates for these key constituencies is crucial for the opposition INDIA bloc.
