Lok Sabha Elections 2024: Opposition Criticizes BJP Ticket to Brij Bhushan Singh’s Son

Brij Bhushan Singh, the incumbent MP from the Kaiserganj seat in Uttar Pradesh, faced criminal charges of sexually harassing women wrestlers. In response to this, the BJP announced Karan Bhushan Singh as its Lok Sabha candidate, replacing his father. This decision stirred strong reactions from political figures.

Congress general secretary Jairam Ramesh criticized the BJP for rewarding Brij Bhushan Singh, stating that the party lacked a moral compass and was solely driven by a thirst for power. Similarly, Shiv Sena MP Priyanka Chaturvedi and TMC Rajya Sabha MP Sagarika Ghose condemned the decision, calling it shameful and accusing the BJP of engaging in the politics of proxy. Ghose also highlighted the contradiction between the BJP’s slogans of women empowerment and its decision to field Karan Singh, the son of an accused perpetrator of sexual assault.

She argued that this move exposed the party’s insincerity regarding women’s rights. Overall, the controversy surrounding Brij Bhushan Singh’s alleged misconduct and the subsequent political response have raised significant concerns about the BJP’s commitment to upholding justice and empowering women.
