India criticizes Canada over Khalistani floats, denouncing glorification of violence. admin, May 7, 2024 India has once again criticized Canada for allowing a parade by Ontario Gurdwara Committee that featured separatist slogans and floats, including one offensive to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The government urged Ottawa to “stop providing criminal and secessionist elements a safe haven.” This comes after New Delhi had recently summoned Canada’s Deputy High Commissioner over Khalistan slogans raised at an event attended by Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. The Ministry of External Affairs stated that the celebration and glorification of violence should not be tolerated in any civilized society, and democratic countries should not allow intimidation by radical elements in the name of freedom of expression. Concerns were raised about the security of Indian diplomatic representatives in Canada, urging the Canadian government to ensure they can carry out their responsibilities without fear. Inflammatory speeches were made at the event, and a map of Khalistan was displayed on one of the floats. The Ministry expressed strong concerns about the violent imagery used by extremist elements in Canada against Indian political leadership. They called upon the Government of Canada to stop providing a safe haven and political space for criminal and secessionist elements. The strained ties between India and Canada were also highlighted, following Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s claims last year regarding the potential involvement of Indian agents in the killing of a Khalistan separatist. These incidents have heightened tensions between the two countries. In a statement, the Indian Foreign Minister, Mr Jaishankar, emphasized that in some countries, such individuals have organized themselves politically and become a political lobby, influencing politicians in democratic countries to cater to their interests. He highlighted the need for these issues to be addressed and not allow them to create political space within other countries. Khalistan Separatist Movement
