Supreme Court dismisses probe agency’s plea against Arvind Kejriwal: “His Assumption… admin, May 16, 2024 Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has been ordered to return to Tihar Jail on June 2. His remark during a rally, “If you vote for AAP, I won’t have to go back to jail,” prompted a petition seeking to revoke his bail and send him back to jail. The court, however, refused this request, stating that his comment expressed his personal opinion and did not violate his bail terms. The court emphasized that their order for his return to jail was clear and that they had not made any exceptions. In response to criticisms, the court clarified that they would not entertain the issue further as their order was clear, the dates for Mr Kejriwal’s return to jail had been set, and reasons for granting interim bail had been provided. Mr Kejriwal’s lawyer, Abhishek Manu Singhvi, pointed out that senior union ministers had made various statements against his client and claimed that efforts were made to “break and humiliate” Mr Kejriwal during his previous stint in Tihar Jail. Mr Kejriwal had also made a statement that he would be watching the election results from jail on June 4 and asserted that he would return on June 5 if the opposition grouping INDIA bloc, led by the Congress and of which the AAP is a member, won. The court also rejected a petition seeking Mr Kejriwal’s removal, and the AAP and Mr Kejriwal have denied all charges, accusing the BJP of orchestrating a “political vendetta” before the polls.
