Tihar Jail instructed to furnish air cooler for conman Sukesh Chandrasekhar.

Sukesh Chandrasekhar is currently in judicial custody in connection with a Rs 200 crore extortion case. He had sought relief on medical grounds, citing skin problems due to high temperature. The Centralized air conditioning system at Mandoli jail is under repair, prompting Additional Sessions Judge (ASJ) Chanderjit Singh to issue a direction.

The court’s directive is based on the report filed by Jail Authorities, advising the accused to maintain an optimum temperature for recovery and avoid further exposure to skin disease. The court ordered the jail authorities to take measures to maintain the optimum room temperature in the accused’s cell, and to provide a private cooler at his own expense if necessary, due to the unprecedented heat in Delhi. The court noted the unprecedented heat in Delhi and emphasized the importance of interpreting the health concerns of the accused under the general principle of providing careful attention to the health of prisoners.

The advocate for the accused had submitted that the central cooling system at his cell was deliberately turned off. It was reported that the centralized cooling system at Mandoli Jail complex is under repair/replacement, with the matter already reported to the concerned department. The counsel for the accused also highlighted the extreme heat conditions affecting the accused’s health.
