Assam Rifles denies Maring Tribe Body’s accusations of illegal immigrants in Manipur. admin, June 19, 2024 A group from the Maring tribe reported finding an alleged illegal settlement between pillar number 82 and 89 near the Myanmar border. The Assam Rifles, however, denied the existence of such settlements, stating that some refugees have sought shelter in the area due to the war-like situation in Myanmar. The refugees are repatriated as the security situation improves, and they are in self-help, thatched huts with polythene covers. The state administration is aware of the refugees’ presence and has collected their biometric data. RAMO volunteers reported a considerable presence of Myanmar refugees building houses and other structures in the Chanringphai, Choktong, N Satang, and Sangtong villages under Lamlong Khunou circle. Village chiefs expressed their inability to manage the influx of refugees from Myanmar, which has been ongoing amidst ethnic strife between the Kuki tribes and the Meiteis in Manipur since May 2023.
