Counter by Trinamool on Mob Justice and BJP’s ‘Kangaroo Court’ Comments in Chopra

The Chopra mob justice case in north Bengal has drawn criticism towards the Mamata Banerjee government from the Opposition. The ruling Trinamool Congress, however, has emphasized its zero tolerance policy towards such crimes and has taken action by arresting the main accused and providing police security for the victim. A senior Trinamool leader defended the party and government’s stance, pointing out similar incidents in previous regimes and in BJP-ruled states. A video showing a man assaulting a woman and another man in public has sparked outrage and criticism of the state government.

The BJP and the CPM have accused the Trinamool government of failing to maintain law and order, with the Opposition alleging links between the main accused and a local Trinamool MLA. The MLA denied any association with the accused and described the incident as a village matter unrelated to the party, though he criticized the woman’s actions. The BJP has strongly condemned the Trinamool Congress, with a spokesperson referring to West Bengal as being under “Taliban rule” and accusing the accused of being a habitual offender associated with the ruling party. The CPM has also voiced strong criticism, labeling the incident as “bulldozer justice” and highlighting the accused’s alleged involvement in the murder of a Left leader.

In a swipe at both the Trinamool and BJP, the CPM leader referenced the “Suvendu model,” suggesting that justice remains elusive in Bengal. The situation has been portrayed as a travesty of justice and a continuation of previous models of governance.
