Congress Opposes Manipur-Like Situation in Tripura: Gaurav Gogoi admin, July 18, 2024 Gaurav Gogoi, accompanied by Lok Sabha Member and former Union Minister Tariq Anwar and other senior Congress leaders, claimed that the law and order situation in Tripura has collapsed. They met with Tripura Governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu to discuss ongoing violent incidents related to Panchayat elections and recent ethnic violence in Ganda Twisa in the state’s Dhalai district. On July 12, large-scale arson, attacks, and looting occurred in Ganda Twisa following the death of a tribal college student, Parameshwar Reang, who succumbed to his injuries after being assaulted on July 7. Over 300 villagers sought shelter in special camps following the violence. The Tripura government announced Rs 1.60 crore compensation for the 166 affected families. Gogoi, elected to the Lok Sabha from Assam’s Jorhat Parliamentary constituency, expressed concerns about the collapse of law and order, threats to democracy and the Constitution, and the lack of due justice for the people from the authorities. He mentioned that despite informing the police authority about the violence in Ganda Twisa and incidents related to the upcoming Panchayat elections, the government has not taken sufficient action against the perpetrators. Demanding the Governor’s intervention, Gogoi highlighted that their party candidates faced obstacles in submitting nominations, casting doubts on the fairness of the upcoming Panchayat elections scheduled for August 8. Tariq Anwar also emphasized the importance of holding the elections in a free, fair, and transparent manner. In response to these concerns, the Tripura High Court directed the State Election Commission (SEC) to ensure free and fair three-tier Gram Panchayats elections on August 8. The court issued this order after the opposition Congress and the CPI-M filed separate petitions seeking its directions to the SEC following a series of violent incidents and obstacles faced by opposition party candidates during the nomination process.
