Over 4,500 Indian Students Return From Bangladesh Amidst Violence Crisis admin, July 21, 2024 The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) announced that a significant number of Indian nationals, including students from Nepal, Bhutan and the Maldives, have returned to India. The MEA revealed that over 4,500 Indian students have already made their way back to the country, with efforts being made to ensure their safety during travel. The Indian missions in Bangladesh are actively engaged with local authorities to safeguard the well-being of Indian nationals in the region. Security arrangements are being coordinated by the High Commission to facilitate the safe return of citizens to border-crossing points. Furthermore, the MEA shared that coordination with relevant Indian authorities is ongoing to ensure a seamless passage for citizens at land-ports and airports. Efforts are also underway to establish flight services between India and Bangladesh in collaboration with civil aviation authorities and commercial airlines. The Indian missions are maintaining regular communication with the remaining Indian students and nationals in Bangladesh to provide welfare and assistance. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal disclosed that the total number of Indian nationals in Bangladesh, including roughly 8,500 students, is estimated to be around 15,000. The situation in Bangladesh has been tense, with ongoing clashes and a disputed job-quota system leading to fatalities and unrest. Bangladesh has implemented a nationwide curfew as clashes between protesters and law enforcement persist. The recent developments have prompted the High Commission of India and the Assistant High Commissions in several cities in Bangladesh to facilitate the return of Indian nationals to India. These actions have been taken in response to the evolving situation in Bangladesh. (*This story has not been edited by NDTV staff and is published from a syndicated feed. *) Bangladesh
