Poor Conditions in Assam Foreigners Detention Centre Reported by Supreme Court

The court expressed concern over the lack of water and sanitation facilities, as well as non-functioning toilets at a detention centre in Matia, Goalpara district. Justices Abhay Oka and AG Masih referred to a report by the Secretary of the Assam Legal Services Authority, highlighting the inadequate conditions.

The court questioned the management of the facilities, citing the absence of proper toilets and medical facilities, and expressed dissatisfaction with the poor water supply and sanitation system. The court directed the Law Authority to conduct a follow-up visit to assess the facilities and the quantity and quality of food and kitchen hygiene, with a report to be submitted within three weeks.

The petitioner stated that the Matia detention centre holds 3,000 people, and the court directed the centre to respond on the issue of deportation within the same time frame. The court’s decision to direct the Assam Legal Services Authority to visit the detention camp was made in this context.
