Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on Congress Leader’s Remark About “Bangladesh Can Happen Here” – Keep Watch

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar has cautioned against drawing parallels between the situation in Bangladesh and India, particularly in relation to the recent unrest in Bangladesh. He expressed concern over efforts to create a narrative suggesting that what occurred in Bangladesh could happen in India, and criticized Congress leaders for drawing an equivalence between the two countries. At the same event, Congress leader Shashi Tharoor mentioned the importance of democracy and free and fair elections, but expressed difficulty in explaining the remarks made by another Congress leader, Salman Khurshid.

On the other hand, BJP MP Rajiv Pratap Rudy strongly criticized Khurshid’s comments, describing them as “anarchist.” The context of the discussion includes protests in both Bangladesh and India. In Bangladesh, there were protests against the government, calling for the end of Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s rule.

This unrest also saw attacks on businesses and homes owned by Hindus, who account for around eight percent of the country’s population. In response, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi highlighted the need to ensure the safety and protection of Hindus and other minority communities. The aftermath of Hasina’s departure saw a focus on restoring law and order under a caretaker administration led by Mr. Yunus.

The unrest in Bangladesh had resulted in over 450 deaths and numerous clashes between demonstrators and law enforcement. Overall, the Vice President’s remarks emphasized the need to guard against creating a narrative that links the situation in Bangladesh with potential events in India, and highlighted the importance of maintaining peace and security within both countries.
