Kolkata Doctor Rape and Murder: Police Share Rioters’ Photos After Vandalism at RG Kar Medical College

The city police in Kolkata have sought assistance from the public in identifying individuals depicted in photos shared on Facebook. The images show rioters causing damage, vandalizing vehicles, and storming a hospital building.

The rioters’ actions resulted in the injury of several police officers, and teargas shells had to be deployed to regain control of the situation. Despite claims that the rioters compromised the crime scene, the Kolkata Police have stated otherwise and cautioned against the spread of rumors by social media users.

The incident has fueled a political dispute over a recent heinous crime at the government-run hospital. The leader of the opposition, BJP’s Suvendu Adhikari, has alleged that the rioters were deliberately sent by Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee to disrupt an apolitical protest rally near the hospital.

He accused the police of either allowing the rioters to enter the hospital premises or turning a blind eye to their actions. In response, Abhishek Banerjee, Trinamool Congress general secretary, condemned the vandalism and urged the Kolkata Police Commissioner to identify and hold accountable every individual responsible for the violence within the next 24 hours, irrespective of their political affiliations.

The leader emphasized the fair and justified demands of the protesting doctors and stressed the importance of prioritizing their safety and security. The riot at the hospital has raised concerns and sparked a broader debate about the escalating tensions in West Bengal and other cities, including the chilling rape-murder incident that prompted the ‘reclaim the night’ protest by women across the region.
