The emergency ward at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital was vandalized during the protest, which was part of a nationwide agitation to make the night safer for women. During the protest, a large crowd assembled at the hospital campus, and “outsiders” were reported to be part of the mob. As the situation escalated, the police used tear gas and resorted to a lathi-charge to control the agitators. Riot control police were also deployed, and incidents of stone pelting were reported. The protesters demanded justice for the 31-year-old postgraduate trainee and dismantled barricades erected by the police. Additionally, a bike was set on fire outside the hospital. The incident has caused widespread shock and outrage, leading to protests and strikes by resident doctors. The Kolkata Police chief, Vineet Goyal, denied allegations of mishandling the case by the police when he arrived at the hospital around 2 am.
