Mamata Banerjee accuses rivals of vandalism at RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata and links it to a Left-BJP nexus.

Mamata Banerjee, along with women MPs from her Trinamool party, protested the killing of a Kolkata doctor. As the Chief Minister and in-charge of the Home and Health ministries, Banerjee accused rivals of attempting to obscure the truth behind the rape and murder.

She condemned the spread of lies on social media and expressed the need for the culprits to be punished. During a rally in Kolkata, Banerjee alleged a nexus between the Left and BJP, claiming they were trying to create unrest in Bengal.

She accused them of vandalizing the hospital and attempting to destroy evidence, asserting that they had come together for this purpose. In response, the BJP claimed that it was Banerjee’s party that sponsored the attack on the hospital.

The relationship between the Trinamool party and the Left party and the Congress is fragile, with the three failing to find common ground during the April-June Lok Sabha election. This rift led to the INDIA bloc fielding candidates against Ms. Banerjee, resulting in the Trinamool’s victory.

The Kolkata doctor’s murder has put Banerjee’s government under heavy scrutiny, with allegations against the hospital administration and the police. The Calcutta High Court has overruled the Chief Minister’s deadline to the police and handed the case to the CBI, also directing the CBI to submit an interim report into the vandalism.

The doctor’s murder has sparked massive protests from the medical community in Bengal and across India. The High Court has demanded better protection for doctors and healthcare workers.

As the controversy continues, Prime Minister Narendra Modi made his first public (but indirect) comment on the Kolkata doctor murder case during his Independence Day address, calling for the strictest possible punishment for crimes against women. Violence against women has also been reported in Rajasthan and Uttarakhand in recent weeks.
