5 Facts About Tahawwur Rana, Pakistani-Origin Accused in 26/11 Mumbai Attacks

Rana is currently incarcerated in the United States and a recent ruling by a California court has authorized his extradition to India. This decision stems from Rana’s alleged involvement in the Mumbai terror attacks, where he was said to have been in communication with terrorist groups and their leaders in Pakistan. Testimony from David Coleman Headley, a major figure in the 26/11 attacks, implicated Rana in the events. Additionally, Rana is accused of having ties with Pakistan’s Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI).

In the United States, Rana faced trial in a district court on charges related to supporting the terror group behind the Mumbai attacks. Although the jury acquitted him of conspiring to provide material support to terrorism specifically linked to the attacks in India, Rana served a seven-year sentence for other convictions and was granted compassionate release. Subsequently, India sought his extradition to face trial for his alleged connections to the Mumbai attacks. Rana contested that India had not presented enough evidence to demonstrate probable cause for the charged crimes.

Despite his arguments, the extradition court upheld the decision, certifying his eligibility for extradition to India.
