Live Updates: Kolkata Doctor Rape-Murder Case – SC Orders Doctors to Resume Work Without Victimisation

The incident has sparked a nationwide strike by doctors. A bench, led by Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud, stated that the nation cannot wait for another rape case for changes to occur on the ground.

The court has constituted a National Task Force to ensure the safety of doctors and has resumed hearing the case. Once the doctors resume work, authorities will be urged not to take any adverse action.

It is emphasized that the public health infrastructure must become functional. There is a counsel’s plea to include resident doctors in the National Task Force, but the Chief Justice expressed concerns about the practicality of involving representatives in the NTF, highlighting the senior women doctors already involved.

The court intends to ensure that all doctors and their representatives are heard and passed a general order against victimization. The focus is on encouraging resident doctors, who are seen as younger professionals, to understand and return to work.

In a separate case, a bench led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, along with Justices JB Pardiwala and Manoj Misra, is hearing the CBI’s status report, submitted in a sealed cover, regarding the investigation into the Kolkata Horror Case. Both the CBI and the Kolkata Police have submitted their reports as per the court’s direction, with the latter regarding the mob attack on the hospital.
