Transferring of New Principal and 2 Others from RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata Rape Case admin, August 21, 2024 Three top officials of state-run R.G Kar Medical College & Hospital in Kolkata have been shifted amid a row. The newly-appointed Principal Suhrita Pal, the newly-appointed Medical Superintendent & Vice Principal Bulbul Mukhopadhyay, and the head of the institute’s Chest Medicine Department, Dr. Arunava Duta Chowdhury, have been reassigned. The decision was made in response to the demands of protesting junior doctors and medical students at the college and the broader medical community, with the aim of restoring normal medical services in the state’s health sector. Additionally, the state government has withdrawn its earlier notification to appoint former R.G Kar Principal Sandip Ghosh as the Principal of Calcutta National Medical College & Hospital. Earlier, representatives of the medical fraternity organized a protest rally to the state Health Department headquarters, where a delegation met with department officials to submit a memorandum listing their demands. The demands included the withdrawal of the notification for Ghosh’s appointment and the removal of Pal as the current RG Kar Principal. After the meeting, the delegation members expressed disappointment at the lack of a firm commitment from the state Health Department officials regarding their demands. They declared their intention to continue their agitation until their demands were met. Responding to this pressure, the state government decided to accept some of the demands and shifted the concerned officials.
