Kolkata Doctor Rape and Murder: Top Court Criticizes RG Kar Medical College Principal

The Chief Justice of the Supreme Court, DY Chandrachud, questioned the delayed filing of the FIR by Kolkata Police almost 14 hours after the discovery of the victim’s body. He emphasized the importance of the college principal immediately directing the filing of the FIR. The West Bengal government counsel, Kapil Sibal, assured that the state would respond to this matter separately.

Both the CBI and Kolkata Police submitted separate status reports to the Supreme Court. The central agency’s report related to the probe into the doctor’s rape and murder, while the city police provided an update on the investigation into the mob vandalism at the Kolkata hospital. Sibal sought protection for the state government to handle future protests, to which the Chief Justice questioned how the state could be protected.

The court clarified its earlier direction that the state should not take coercive action on peaceful protests, while reaffirming that peaceful protests should not be disturbed. The next hearing is scheduled for September 5. The court is hearing petitions related to the rape and murder of a 31-year-old doctor at a state-run hospital.

The victim, a postgraduate trainee doctor, was found dead in the hospital’s seminar hall on August 9, and rape was confirmed through medical examination. Kolkata Police arrested an accused named Sanjoy Roy, while the CBI has not made any arrests in the case yet.
