AG Noorani, Former Supreme Court Lawyer, Passes Away at 93

AG Noorani, an accomplished legal scholar and political commentator, passed away at the age of 93. Born in Bombay in 1930, he began his writing career in the early 1960s and authored several books, including The Kashmir Question, Badruddin Tyabji, Ministers’ Misconduct, and Constitutional Questions in India.

He also contributed columns to various publications such as Hindustan Times, The Hindu, and The Statesman. Among his notable legal endeavors, Noorani defended Sheikh Abdullah, the first elected Prime Minister of Jammu and Kashmir after its accession to India, during an extended period of detention.

He also practiced law in the Bombay High Court and represented former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Karunanidhi against his political rival J Jayalalithaa. His passing was mourned by political leaders, with National Conference leader Omar Abdullah expressing condolences and highlighting Noorani’s expertise in law and his writings on subjects like Kashmir, RSS, and the constitution.

Similarly, AIMIM chief Assaduddin Owaisi paid tribute to Noorani, referring to him as a “giant among scholars.” AG Noorani’s contributions as a legal luminary and prolific writer have left a lasting impact, and his passing marks the end of an era in the world of legal scholarship and political commentary.
