Cops confront BJP protesters at Metro Station over RG Kar Medical College incident.

Visuals from the scene showed protesters running inside a metro station as they were pursued by police officers in riot gear. The protesters had planned to march to the state women’s commission office in Salt Lake, alleging partisanship since the discovery of a victim’s body on August 9. However, the police intervened, chasing the protesters into the metro station and apprehending them one by one.

Among those obstructed by the police were senior BJP leaders including Agnimitra Paul, Debasree Choudhury, and Locket Chatterjee. Earlier in the day, Bengal police also halted another rally, detaining around 20 activists who were marching towards the commission’s office at Karunamoyee. These demonstrations unfolded in the aftermath of the discovery of a postgraduate trainee doctor’s body in the seminar hall of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9.

The heinous crime sparked widespread outrage, with the BJP demanding justice and criticizing the ruling Trinamool Congress and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for alleged inaction. Subsequent to the incident, questions have arisen regarding how the accused, Sanjoy Roy, had unrestricted access to every corner of the state-run hospital at all hours, leading to reports that he was involved in illegal arrangements for hospital facilities in exchange for money. Beyond the Opposition BJP and the Left, the ruling party in Bengal has also faced criticism from its ally Congress.

Rahul Gandhi, Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, remarked, “The attempt to save the accused, instead of providing justice to the victim, raises serious questions on the hospital and the local administration.”
