Mohanlal Supports Report on Allegations of Sexual Harassment in Mollywood

The former president of the Association of Malayalam Movie Actors (AMMA) made remarks in response to numerous sexual assault and rape allegations against prominent figures in the industry, such as veteran actor Siddique and filmmaker Ranjith Balakrishnan. He expressed support for the Hema Committee report and emphasized the complexity of the industry, suggesting that not everyone should be blamed for the allegations. The 235-page report by Justice Hema Committee, which did not disclose the names of witnesses and the accused, highlighted the dominance of 10-15 male producers, directors, and actors in the Malayalam film industry.

Actor Mohanlal disassociated himself from any power group within the industry and claimed that the AMMA could not effectively address the issues that have arisen. Mohanlal’s public statement, his first since the release of the expert panel report, emphasized the importance of punishing wrongdoers if there is evidence against them, particularly in relation to the allegations of sexual misconduct and assaults within the Association. Following allegations made by some actors against members of the committee, AMMA issued a statement indicating that the top decision-making body had dissolved itself, assuming “moral responsibility” for the situation.
