Kolkata Doctor’s Parents Allege Police Attempted Bribery Following Daughter’s Murder

The incident took place during the doctor’s night shift and has sparked widespread protests throughout the state, demanding swift action. The father of the victim addressed the protesters, accusing the police of attempting to cover up the case and preventing them from seeing the body initially. He stated that they were made to wait at the police station while the body was taken for post-mortem examinations. Additionally, he mentioned that a senior police officer offered them money when the body was handed over, which they immediately declined.

The parents expressed their support for the junior doctors who are seeking justice for their daughter by joining the protests. The Kolkata Police has faced criticism from both the Opposition and citizens for their handling of the sensitive case. There have been questions raised about how the accused, Sanjoy Roy, had unrestricted access to the state-run hospital at all hours. Reports have also surfaced alleging that he illegally arranged hospital beds and other facilities for patients in exchange for money.

Amid the public outrage, the Calcutta High Court ordered the case to be handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Subsequently, the CBI arrested the former principal of RG Kar Medical College, Dr. Sandip Ghosh, in connection with alleged financial misconduct at the establishment. Furthermore, the West Bengal Assembly passed an anti-rape bill seeking capital punishment for rape convicts in cases where their actions result in the victim’s death or leave her in a vegetative state. This move comes in response to the ongoing protests and demands for justice in the aftermath of the tragic incident.
