‘Reclaim The Night’ Protest in Kolkata Over Doctor’s Rape-Murder Sparks Torch-lit Demonstrations and Anthem Singing admin, September 8, 2024 The atmosphere in Kolkata was charged as protesters, both women and men, young and old, took to the streets to demonstrate against the murder of a young doctor at R G Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9. Participants in the third instance of ‘Reclaim the night’ in the state expressed confidence in the Supreme Court, scheduled to hear the case related to the crime. They were united in their quest for justice for the victim, referred to as ‘Tilottama’ and ‘Abhaya’ by different individuals. Civil society members displayed an unprecedented show of solidarity in various cities, forming human chains, lighting mobile phone flashlights, and wearing black outfits. This demonstration of unity extended across Kolkata and its suburbs, as well as other cities and towns in West Bengal. The protest drew people from diverse backgrounds, including students, teachers, IT professionals, and rickshaw pullers. Even supporters of rival football clubs came together to demand justice for the victim. With the upcoming Durga Puja festival, many referred to her as the daughter of the Goddess Durga, emphasizing her significance as an incarnation of ‘Shakti’ (power). Various gatherings in the city featured the singing of protest songs and demands for the arrest of all culprits. The mother of the victim emphasized her connection with the protesting medics, calling them her children. Former students of over 40 schools also joined the calls for justice, with women playing a significant role in the demonstrations. The protests took different forms, including processions, rally, and human chains, with participants from diverse professions and backgrounds. They held placards and sang protest songs, demanding a swift investigation and justice for the victim. The movement resonated strongly at R G Kar Hospital, where hundreds of junior doctors formed a human chain and sang the national anthem. The parents of the murdered doctor expressed their anguish and stood in solidarity with the protests. Overall, the demonstrations reflected a widespread demand for justice and an unwavering commitment to seeking accountability for the heinous crime.
