Indian-American Student in US Located Days After Disappearance

The US is a popular destination for Indian students seeking higher education. 17-year-old Ishika Thakore had gone missing in Frisco, prompting the police to seek public assistance in tracing her.

The police had posted on social media asking for help in locating Ishika, including details of her last seen appearance. Fortunately, the police later announced that she had been found, expressing gratitude for the support and assistance.

The incidents involving Indian and Indian-origin students in the US have raised concerns. One such case is the recent death of a 25-year-old student from Hyderabad, who was pursuing a Master’s at Cleveland State University.

This adds to a worrying trend of deaths of Indian-origin students in the US. One example is the case of Mohammed Abdul Arfath, who had been missing for nearly three weeks, prompting the consulate to stay in touch with his family.

Since the start of 2024, there have been at least 11 deaths of Indian or Indian-origin students in the US. Despite these concerns, the US remains an attractive destination for Indian students pursuing higher education.

According to official data, over 2.6 lakh Indian students migrated to the US in the 2022-2023 session, marking a 35% increase from the previous session.
