Anil Ambani Faces Another Blow as Group Company Loses Rs 8,000 Crore Arbitration Case

Anil Ambani, the younger son of Dhirubhai Ambani, earned an MBA from Wharton School and was known for his flamboyant nature and unbeatable business acumen. Despite his past successes, he has faced setbacks across his businesses in recent years. The Supreme Court recently set aside an Rs 8,000 crore arbitral award granted in favor of Delhi Airport Metro Express Pvt (DAMEPL), a subsidiary of Anil Ambani’s Reliance Infrastructure, in a dispute with the Delhi Metro Rail Corp. The court has asked DAMEPL to refund all sums previously paid by the Delhi Metro Rail, which amounts to Rs 3,300 crore.

In response, Reliance Infrastructure emphasized that no liability has been imposed on it by the Supreme Court order, stating that the liability falls on DAMEPL. Anil Ambani took on management of Reliance’s financial relationships after his father’s stroke in 1986 and, alongside his elder brother, assumed joint leadership of the Reliance companies after their father’s death in 2002. However, disagreements over control led to a split, with Mukesh gaining control of oil and petrochemicals while Anil gained control of newer businesses. Anil’s ventures into telecommunications, power generation, and financial services faced challenges, including feuding with Mukesh over gas supply and the quashing of a land acquisition for a power project.

Additionally, his forays into entertainment, infrastructure, and defense businesses were also met with difficulties, leading to huge debts and the need to sell assets. Anil Ambani’s struggles continued as his companies faced insolvency proceedings and legal disputes over loan defaults.
