India’s Renewable Energy Park Surpasses Paris in Size by Fivefold admin, April 11, 2024 Khavda, located in Gujarat’s Kutch, is the world’s largest renewable energy park, utilizing a combination of solar and wind energy. Adani Green Energy Ltd, India’s largest renewable energy company, plans to invest about Rs 1.5 lakh crore to generate 30 megawatts of clean electricity at Khavda. The park spans over 538 square kilometers, making it roughly five times the size of Paris. The area has the second best solar radiation in the country after Ladakh and wind speeds five times that of plains, making it an ideal location for the renewable energy park. The airstrip in Khavda, used by the Adani Group, is essential for ferrying group executives from Mundra or Ahmedabad a few times a week. The outer flange of the energy park is just one km from the international border with Pakistan and is manned by BSF. The area poses its own set of challenges, including heavy dust storms, lack of communication and transport infrastructure, and water-related issues. The energy park is expected to have a capacity of 30 GW, comprising 26 GW of solar and 4 GW of wind capacity. The region witnesses high solar irradiation and strong wind resources, but frequent sandstorms require regular cleaning of solar panels. The land belongs to the government, which has leased out the site to Adani group for 40 years. The construction of the park began in 2022 and includes infrastructure development efforts such as roads, drainage, water desalination plants, and connectivity infrastructure. Adani Group’s renewable energy plans are ambitious, aiming to generate 500 GW of electricity from non-fossil sources by 2030, as part of a broader plan to achieve net-zero emissions by 2070. Executives stated that Khavda, at its peak, will generate 81 billion units of electricity, which can power entire nations such as Belgium, Chile, and Switzerland. *Note: This story has been published from a syndicated feed and has not been edited by NDTV staff.
