India Boasts World’s Largest Renewable Energy Park – 5 Times Bigger Than Paris admin, April 11, 2024 The Khavda renewable energy park is the world’s largest, utilizing a combination of solar and wind energy. Located in Gujarat’s Kutch region, the park covers 538 square kilometers, making it roughly five times the size of Paris. It was established by Adani Green Energy Ltd, and the Adani group plans to invest approximately Rs 1.5 lakh crore to generate 30 gigawatts of clean electricity at this site. The park boasts ideal conditions for renewable energy generation, with the second best solar radiation in the country and wind speeds five times that of the plains. The area’s remote location posed various challenges, including heavy dust storms, limited communication and transport infrastructure, and a lack of habitable areas nearby. Despite these challenges, the Adani Group successfully constructed an airstrip in just 35 days to facilitate access for group executives and workers. The park’s infrastructure development efforts included the construction of roads, drainage systems, desalination and reverse osmosis plants for drinking water, and the installation of optical fiber cables for connectivity. The land, which is government-owned, was leased to the Adani group for 40 years. The project aims to generate 81 billion units of electricity at its peak, which can power entire nations such as Belgium, Chile, and Switzerland. The Adani group’s ambitious renewable energy plans align with India’s goal of generating 500 gigawatts of electricity from non-fossil sources by 2030. The park’s capacity will comprise 26 gigawatts of solar and 4 gigawatts of wind energy, supported by innovative technological solutions such as waterless robotic module cleaning systems for the solar panels. In preparation for the development of the site, Adani Green conducted extensive studies and assessments, including geotechnical investigations, environmental and social impact assessments, and detailed feasibility studies. Construction commenced in 2022, and the park is set to play a significant role in India’s renewable energy landscape, contributing to the broader plan of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070.
