India’s Position in the Face of Potential War Between Iran and Israel Explained

Iran, which backs Palestine, has launched a drone attack on Israel amid the latter’s war on Hamas. The Israeli military reported that most of the 200-plus ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, and attack drones were intercepted with the help of Israel’s allies before landing. Iran claimed the attack was in “self-defense” after its diplomatic mission in Damascus was targeted.

New Delhi expressed serious concern about the escalating hostilities and emphasized the need for immediate de-escalation, exercise of restraint, and a return to diplomacy to maintain peace and security in the region. India had previously issued an advisory urging its citizens not to travel to Iran or Israel and to observe utmost precautions. The situation places India in a delicate position due to its strong ties with both Israel and Iran.

India’s strategic relationship with Israel has been strengthened in various fields since the NDA government came to power, including defense and technology cooperation. Additionally, India has a longstanding relationship with Iran as one of its prime oil suppliers, and the two countries concluded a defense pact in 2002. Although India does not consider Hamas a terrorist organization, it described the attack on Israel as a terrorist act and voiced support for Israel in combating terrorism.

However, India also continues to advocate for a two-state solution and remains committed to assisting the Palestinians.
