The Prime Minister noted that people across India are voting for the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) in record numbers. The Election Commission (EC) described the voter turnout as “high” and noted that the voting process remained “largely peaceful.” The first phase of the elections saw polling taking place in 102 constituencies across 21 states and Union Territories. The voter turnout was recorded at 69.43 per cent, with some incidents of violence reported in specific areas, such as West Bengal and Manipur. In Manipur, Congress candidate A Bimol Akoijam alleged interference by BJP workers and an armed group, leading to disruptions in the voting process. Several states and Union Territories completed their voting process in a single-phase election, including Uttarakhand, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Meghalaya, Nagaland, Mizoram, Tamil Nadu, and the Union Territories of Puducherry, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, and Lakshadweep. Notably, voters in 56 villages in Bastar, Chhattisgarh, cast their votes in polling booths within their own villages for the first time. The EC highlighted the historic participation of tribal communities in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, with members of the Shompen tribe of Great Nicobar casting their votes for the first time.
