Amritpal Singh’s lawyer claims he will run for Lok Sabha elections as a separatist.

Amritpal Singh’s father, Tarsem Singh, stated that his son had not previously shown any interest in entering politics. He mentioned that he would reserve his comments on the matter until meeting with Amritpal Singh on Thursday. Rajdev Singh Khalsa, Amritpal Singh’s legal counsel, claimed to have met with him in Dibrugarh jail and urged him to contest the elections in the interests of ‘Khalsa Panth’.

Khalsa asserted that Amritpal Singh accepted his request and will run as an Independent candidate in the Khadoor Sahib constituency. Amritpal Singh, the leader of ‘Waris Punjab De’ outfit, had been arrested in April the previous year, and the stringent National Security Act (NSA) was imposed on him. He and nine of his associates are currently incarcerated in Dibrugarh jail.

Amritpal Singh, who had modeled himself after deceased Khalistani terrorist Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, was apprehended in Moga’s Rode village after a month-long manhunt. He had evaded the police in Jalandhar district by changing vehicles and appearances. The Punjab Police had initiated the crackdown following the Ajnala incident, where Amritpal Singh and his supporters had clashed with the police, leading to multiple criminal cases against them.
